Topic: Fluorite – A Brief History and an Around-the-World Tour
Jim grew up in Cincinnati where his interest in minerals and fossils was influenced by the youth classes offered at that time by the Museum of Natural History when it was located on Gilbert Avenue. Years later, after a rigorous medical education, his childhood collection grew in both quantity and quality to become a truly significant collection that focuses on the colorful mineral fluorite. Although the Southern Illinois mining district is particularly well-represented, Jim has also gathered many fine worldwide specimens. He has arranged for noted photographer Jeff Scovil to photograph many of the specimens, so we are in for a double treat!
In August of this year Jim was the featured exhibitor at the East Coast Mineral Show in Massachusetts, where he displayed his minerals in 52 cases! That should give some idea of the scope of his collection. Happily he has agreed to present the program he gave at that event, and show us some of the World’s best-of-the-best fluorite. Jim and his fluorite collection were also featured in the current July/August issue of Rocks & Minerals in an article written by Carl Francis.
